Every human being is the author of his own health or disease. - Buddha
Healthy Environment
Food, water and shelter are the fundamentals of life, and this usually equates to having enough money for these basic needs, or providing them for yourself. This is basic subsistence.
Society provides an added safety and security on top of basic subsistence, which is also important for basic physical and mental health. Society provides security in your home, security of work and the absence of war or conflict. Different populations have different ideas for what society should be like, but many parts of the world still suffer from the problems of an unstable society. Lack of pollution is also important for basic health, and this is both a local and a global problem now.
Healthy relationships are also part of a healthy environment. Friendship, family relationships and sexual intimacy all contribute to a healthy body and mind. This is the cumulation of one-to-one, individual relationships which are experienced in everyday life, within the context of society.
Daily Health Choices
How you treat your body on a daily basis throughout your life has the greatest effect on your health, both the positive things you do to actively improve your health, and also the negative things that make your health worse. Such things as good nutrition, regular exercise, and not damaging your body physically or chemically all play their part.
Nutrition is the most important of your daily life choices, and poor nutrition is responsible for many health problems. Healthy eating does require some effort. It needs an understanding of which foods are healthy, and which are not, and why this is the case. Healthy eating also needs planning and preparation to make sure you buy the right foods and prepare them properly.
Exercise is the next important, but this doesn't mean going to the gym. It's the way you use your muscles for everyday regular exercise that matters most, as everything counts. So walking, housework and gardening are all great. Just do some exercise regularly to get you a bit hot and a bit out of puff. Half an hour's exercise five days a week is the minimum to aim for. This can be just brisk walking, and 10,000 steps a day is a good level to aim for. Get the nutrition and exercise right and your weight will look after itself.
Be safe. This covers everything from health and safety at work to careful driving. Your body can be damaged by a moment of carelessness or bravado, which can cause a disability for life. Young males are the worst offenders here.
Beware of toxic chemicals. This covers all forms of drug use. Prescription medicines cause a lot of harm, so you should be very careful about how and why you take them. Recreational drug use has become widespread, and carries it's own dangers, including the drugs that have become socially acceptable. Smoking is very damaging to health, and you have to be careful to use alcohol within safe limits.
Poor daily health choices are responsible for about 80% of illness. The rest are down to environmental and genetic causes. However, the latest work on genetics shows that even genes you inherit which increase your chance of an illness can be switched off by good daily health choices and a healthy mind.
Healthy Mind
Your mind effects your health in a very big way, and the pressures of modern life can lead to stress, which can severely affect your health. Most stress is based on an underlying fear which you cannot resolve, and this conflict can eat away at your health, happiness and success.
Health Checks
Your weight is an important thing to look after. Your weight is determined by the amount of body fat you store, as well as the amount of muscle you have. Being overweight effect the way your body actually works, and has many negative effects on your health.
