Side-effects: Some people may experience stomach irritation. This can be minimised by diluting sachets well with water or by taking with or after meals.
If you do experience any unusual symptoms, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Some helpful information on cystitis: Cystitis is a distressing condition caused by an infection and/or inflammation of the bladder.
If you have had cystitis before you will know the symptoms which are:
- A sharp stinging sensation on passing water
- An urge to pass water more frequently
- Darker urine than normal or bleeding in the urine
- Stomach or groin pains
- A high body temperature and general tiredness
The first two symptoms are the most common: If you experience any of the other symptoms it is advisable to consult your doctor
There are two types of cystitis Bacterial cystitis and Non-Bacterial cystitis:
Bacterial cystitis is caused by bacteria left after a bowel movement reaching the bladder. This may occur during sexual intercourse, or be due to ineffective/infrequent hygiene.
Non-bacterial cystitis can be caused by a number of triggers including certain soaps, deodorants, insufficient water-based liquid intake, or even tight trousers.
- Cystitis will occur in 4 out of 5 women at least once in their lifetime, so it is a very common complaint
- These attacks usually cause no lasting damage
Cystitis can also occur in men and children: but this is quite rare and medical advice should be sought.
What you can do during an attack:
- Try to drink as much water as possible, preferably at least 8 glasses per day
- Avoid alcohol, fruit juices, coffee and strong tea
- Pass water regularly
When you should see a doctor: Cystitis is normally no more than a painful nuisance and only rarely becomes more serious.
However, if you experience any of the following you should consult your doctor:
- If your urine becomes cloudy or blood is seen in it
- If your symptoms return or persist after treatment
- If you suffer severe stomach, groin or back pain
- If you have a temperature
- If you have unusually heavy vaginal discharge
- If you are taking any other medicine prescribed by your doctor
- If you are pregnant or have any kidney or heart disease
How to help avoid cystitis in the future: There are many causes of cystitis and it is often difficult to establish what causes an individual attack.
Here are a few things that may help to prevent it in the future:
- Try to drink plenty of fluids every day
- Take care of your personal hygiene. It can help if you and your partner wash carefully before and after sexual intercourse.
- Always go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need to pass water. Keeping your bladder flushed will help it work normally.
- Avoid using perfumes, deodorants and perfumed soaps around the vaginal area.
