Homocysteine

Homocysteine feed

'Homocysteine is the new cholesterol' because high levels of homocysteine are corrosive to the body. High homocysteine levels are more important than blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, exercise and weight in predicting your health, and yet it is not something that your doctor will look at as part of your health check. This is one area that is entirely up to you. High homocysteine levels increase your risk for over fifty diseases including heart attacks, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, depression and Alzheimer's disease. One in two people in the UK has a high homocysteine level, and so this is a huge heath problem. The good news is that this risk can be reversed in weeks.

Homocysteine is produced naturally in the body from the breakdown of protein. It is, however, toxic and a high level in your blood is the single most important marker to show if you will live a long life or die young. Unfortunately, a poor diet or a common genetic factor leads to its accumulation.

'There is one factor that can determine better than any other whether you will live long and healthy or die young. It's called homocysteine' - Patrick Holford

What's your homocysteine level? -

  • 15+ is common after a heart attack
  • 10 is the average UK level
  • 6 or below is ideal

For every 5 point increase in homocysteine there is an incerase in -

  • 59% for stroke
  • 49% for death from all causes
  • 32% for heart attack
  • 26% for cancer

'A high homocysteine level isn't just associated with a higher risk, it actually causes heart disease' - Patrick Holford

One in two people has a high homocysteine level which can be corrected by diet and supplements.

One in ten people has an inherited genetic mutation that leads to the accumulation of honocysteine in the blood. This wil not be tested for by your doctor but can usually be corrected by diet and supplements.

How to lower your homocysteine level -

  • Eat less fatty meat, more fish and vegetable protein
  • Eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day
  • Eat a clove of garlic a day or have a garlic supplement
  • Cut back on salt, tea, coffee and alcohol
  • Give up smoking
  • Take a high strength vitamin and mineral supplement every day such as Higher Nature Advanced Optimum Nutrition Formula plus 1 gram of vitamin C plus Higher Nature H Factors as appropriate.
