Ispaghula (Psyllium)

Ispaghula or psyllium is the common name used for several related plants whose seeds are used commercially for the production of mucilage. This type of mucilage is a form of hydrophilic (Water loving) fibre, often referred to as husk. Natural fibres are not absorbed in the gut, and pass straight through, but swell in the gut and provide essential lubrication and bulk to the intestinal content. They are used as safe natural fibre supplements to promote bowel regularity and help prevent or treat constipation.
