Beechams Decongestant Plus with Paracetamol is for short term relief of the symptoms of influenza (flu), chills and colds, including feverish colds and the symptoms of nasal congestion, sinusitis and its associated pain and acute nasal catarrh.

Also may be used for the relief of headache, migraine, sore throat pain, neuralgia, toothache, rheumatic pain, aches and pains and period pain.

  • Paracetamol is an analgesic (a pain killer), and antipyretic (it reduces body temperature when you have a fever).
  • Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic decongestant which unblocks your nose and sinuses helping you breathe more easily.
  • Caffeine acts to further help the effectiveness of paracetamol.
Directions

How to take Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol:

Adults (including the elderly) and children aged 12 years and over:

  • Take 2 capsules to be taken 3 to 4 hours as required.
  • Do not take more than 12 capsules in 24 hours.

Children aged 6 to under 12 years:

  • 1 capsule to be given every 3-4 hours as required
  • No more than 6 capsules in 24 hours.
  • Do not give to children under 6 years of age unless your doctor tells you to
  • If symptoms persist consult your doctor
Overdose: It will be harmful to take more than the doses stated on the pack and in this leaflet. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of an overdose, even if you feel well, because of the risk of delayed, serious liver damage.

Each Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol capsule contains as the active ingredients: Paracetamol 300 mg, phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg and caffeine 25 mg.

The capsules also contains: Lactose, colloidal silica. dimethicone, gelatin and colours; amaranth (E123), erythrosine (E127), sunset yellow (E110), titanium dioxide (E171).

Warnings

Check before you taking Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol:

  • This medicine contains paracetamol. Do not take with any other paracetamol-containing products.
  • Also contains a decongestant; Do not take with other products for the relief of flu colds or congestion.

Do not take Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol if:

  • you are allergic to paracetamol, caffeine, phenylephrine hydrochloride, or any of the ingredients listed. Colour E110 and E123 can cause allergic-type reactions including asthma. Allergy is more common in those people allergic to aspirin.
  • you have severe kidney or liver problems, overactive thyroid, or are under the care of your doctor for high blood pressure or heart disease.
  • you are taking drugs for heart problems (including beta-blockers) or within the last two weeks have taken drugs prescribed by your doctor or hospital for depression, (including monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAOIs).

Note before using: The maximum daily adult dose (12 capsules), contains up to 1.25g of lactose. It is unsuitable for people with an intolerance to milk sugars.

Talk to your doctor if:

  • you are taking medicines to thin your blood e.g. warfarin
  • you are taking cholestyramine which is used to lower blood cholesterol, or metoclopramide or domperidone for nausea or vomiting

If you are pregnant or breast feeding:

  • As with all medicines you should ask your doctor before using Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol if you are pregnant. You should only use this product at this time if your doctor thinks it appropriate and necessary.
  • If you are breast feeding ask your doctor before taking Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol. Usually the product can be taken at this time.
Side-effects: The ingredients in Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol are usually well tolerated in normal use. However skin rashes and other allergic effects occur occasionally with paracetamol. There have been very rare reports of blood disorders but these were not necessarily caused by paracetamol. There have been a few reports of headache, dizziness, sleeplessness, sickness and diarrhoea or rarely palpitations occurring with phenylephrine. These effects should go away if you stop taking the medicine.

If you are concerned about any other effect while taking Beechams Decongestant Plus With Paracetamol, stop taking the medicine and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
