Cuprofen Plus for fast powerful pain relief including muscle and joint pain
Cuprofen Plus is used for relief of pain including: muscle & joint pain, backache, fibrositis, tennis elbow, sports injuries (e.g. sprains, strains) and for pain due to non serious arthritis. They can also be used for headache, migraine, neuralgia, fever, aches and pains of colds and flu, period and dental pain.
Cuprofen Plus contain the active ingredients Ibuprofen and Codeine, which are both painkillers (analgesics):
- By working on your body in different ways ibuprofen and codeine combine to relieve pain and ease pain and stiffness
- Ibuprofen belongs to a family of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which relieve pain and reduce inflammation
Codeine Restrictions: Products containing codeine and codeine related products may not be supplied to the USA and Norway
How to take Cuprofen Plus:
- Always follow the instructions in your own product
- For oral use
- This product is intended for short term use only
- You should take the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary to relieve your symptoms
- Do not take this product for longer than 3 days without consulting your doctor
Adults the elderly and children aged 12 years and over: Take one or two Cuprofen Plus tablets with water every 4-6 hours
- Leave at least 4 hours between doses
- Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours
Do not give to children under 12 years of age
- Do not exceed the stated dose
- If symptoms persist or worsen consult your doctor
- Consult your doctor immediately if you take more than the number of tablet stated
Each Cuprofen Plus Tablet contains: Ibuprofen 200mg and codeine phosphate hemihydrate 12.8mg.
Cuprofen Plus Tablets also contain: Microcrystalline cellulose, hydrogenated vegetable oil, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycollate, colloidal silicon dioxide and lactose.
The film coat contains: hypromellose and polyethylene glycol
Check before you take Cuprofen Plus:
- If you need to use this medicine for more than three days at a time see your doctor pharmacist or heath care professional
- Taking codeine regularly for a long time can lead to addiction, which might cause you to feel restless and irritable when you stop the tablets
- Taking a painkiller for headaches too often or for too long can make them worse
- The tablets may make you feel dizzy or drowsy. If affected do not dive or operate machinery.
- This medicine contains lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars contact your, doctor before taking.
- Medicines such an Cuprofen Plus may be associated with a small increased risked heat attack (myocardial infarction) or stroke. Any risk is more likely with high doses and prolonged treatment. Do not exceed the recommended dose or take for longer than 3 days without consulting your, doctor.
Do not take Cuprofen Plus if you:
- Are allergic to Ibuprofen, codeine or any of the other ingredients listed, aspirin or other NSAIDS
- Have had a stomach ulcer, perforation or bleeding of the stomach
- Are taking aspirin at doses of above 75mg daily. If you are on low-dose aspirin (up to 75mg daily) speak to your doctor or pharmacist before you take these tablets.
- Are taking other NSAID painkillers
- Suffer from severe liver or heart problems, or kidney problems.
- Are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
Please see your doctor before you take Cuprofen Plus if you:
- Suffer or have suffered form asthma
- Are elderly
- Suffer from liver or kidney disease or have heart problems
- Suffer from digestive disease, high blood pressure or autoimmune disease, such as Lupus, which can result in joint pains, skin changes and disorders of other organs.
- Have been prescribed dugs to thin the blood (anticoagulants) e.g. warfarin, dugs such as aspirin (75mg) to prevent blood clots, or diuretics (water tablets).
- Are taking MAOIs or lithium (to treat depression), methotrexate (to treat diseases involving rapid cell growth such as cancer), zidovudine (to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)), anti-hypertensives (to treat high blood pressure), or corticosteroids (to treat allergic inflammatory disorders)
- Have heart problems, previous stroke or think that you might be at risk of these conditions (for example if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol or are a smoker)
- Your headaches become persistent, see your doctor
This medicine belongs to a group of medicines which may impair fertility in women. This effect goes away when the medicine is stopped. It is unlikely that this medicine, used occasionally, will affect your chances of becoming pregnant, however, tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you have problems becoming pregnant.
If you are pregnant or breast feeding:
- Do not take this product if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
- Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you are in the first 6 months of pregnancy or breast feeding
Most people taking this Cuprofen Plus find they cause them no problems: As with all medicines, however sometimes unwanted side effects can occur and the elderly are more likely to suffer such effects.
If you suffer from any of the following at any time during your treatment stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help:

Bleeding in the stomach or stomach ulcer signs of bleeding in the stomach may include:
- Passing blood in your faeces (stools/motions)
- Passing black tarry stools
- Vomiting any blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds
Stop taking the medicine aid tell your doctor if you experience:
- Abdominal pain (pain in your stomach) or other abdominal stomach symptoms
- Allergic reactions, which can include the following: bruising or facial swelling; swelling of the lips, throat and tongue causing difficulty swallowing or breathing; breathing problems, e.g. unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, asthma or worsening of asthma; skin reactions, e.g. skin rashes, itching, urticaria (hives) which can be severe with blistering and peeling of the skin; rapid heart rate/palpitations, collapsing or low blood pressure.
- Blood disorders such as anaemia, low white blood cells, low platelet count, suppressed bone marrow function or reduction in agranulocytes (a type of white blood cell which could result in the following symptoms: unexplained bruising or bleeding, sore throat, mouth ulcers, fever extreme paleness, weakness or exhaustion.
The following effects could also occur, tell your doctor if your experience these effects: Stomach pains, nausea and digestive problems; rarely may cause diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting or flatulence, worsening of existing bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease).

Very rarely may cause:
- Blood in urine, kidney damage or kidney failure
- Liver problems such as hepatitis or jaundice (yellowing of the skin)
- Headache, dizziness, vertigo and ringing in the ears
- Medicines such as Cuprofen Plus may be associated with a small increased risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) or stroke. Fluid retention (oedema), high blood pressure, and heart failure have also been reported.
If you are concerned about these effects, or if this medicine affects you in any other way, stop taking it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
