What Is An Entrepreneur?
An entrepreneur can be looked at in two quite separate ways -
- The usual understanding of an entrepreneur is based on economics and business. It is the person who starts a new venture, and takes the risks that this involves. New ventures are risky because 80% of them fail in the first five years, yet there is no shortage of people to start them. Such entrepreneurs have an essential optimism and self confidence in their ability to make something positive happen, and measure its success by making money. However the motivation of most entrepreneurs isn't just to make money, but is much more about being able to work for themselves, to be responsible for the successful outcome of their efforts, and to be their own boss.
- Success philosophers say that we are all entrepreneurs responsible for our own lives. Each of us is the Managing Director of the business called "Me Limited". OK, it might be a small business, but each of us is responsible for it in just the same way as we would be for a real business. The big difference is that this business carries on until you die. You can't retire from it , and it carries on even if you go bankrupt. You can make a success of it, or it can be a failure. It's all up to you.
The entrepreneur in us sees opportunities everywhere we look, but many people see only problems everywhere they look. The entrepreneur in us is more concerned with discriminating between opportunities than he or she is with failing to see the opportunities. - Michael Gerber
Everyone is an entrepreneur
Everyone is an entrepreneur in charge of our own life and destiny. The choices you make each day determine how much control you actually have over your own life, and the life of those you love, because this is never a journey you can make on your own.
You are born into the world as a result of other people's entrepreneurship and are quite helpless, but babies soon learn how to relate to their parents and the two way exchange of love and warmth and ideas happens. During childhood you develop your own personality and your own view of how the world works. This is refined throughout life as you gain increasing independence, and become more responsible for your own actions. Standing on your own feet and becoming responsible for your own actions are entrepreneurial skills which will lead to you becoming responsible for your own life. The alternative is moving from being looked after by your parents, to being looked after at school, then at work, then in a marriage, and never being truly responsible for yourself. Working on "Me Ltd" through life is essential to personal and business success.
Business entrepreneurs just take the whole process further and take their confidence into a new endeavour. The ones that succeed use their knowledge, skills and passions to work for them. This can start in a small way and grow gradually as you learn new skills and gain in experience.

The entrepreneur is not really interested in doing the work; he is interested in creating the way the company operates. In that regard, the entrepreneur is an inventor. He or she loves to invent, but does not love to manufacture or sell or distribute what he or she invents.- Michael Gerber
